I have spent the day looking for good crossovers to read and come to the conclusion that a lot of the people who are writing IY/YYH stories don't seem to have a good grasp on the YYH guys. Maybe it's because they haven't seen the series and are relying only on other stories they read.
I'm hoping that this post will help someone out there to either improve the stories they are working on or give them an idea of what to avoid if they are thinking of writing. As I've said before some ooc is acceptable but there are so many cliches out there that make us want to pull our hair out. I've seen a lot of people criticizing crossovers because of these pits that so many seem to fall into. Perhaps this will help someone. Feel free to add, correct, debate, ect to this list if you wish. Just please keep it civil. My only hope is that it will help better our work and perhaps bring more fans over to this side of the fan fiction world.
Kazuma Kuwabara. First and foremost, he is not a complete idiot with an IQ smaller than his shoe size. Writing a story and portraying him such as well as calling him names such as Kuwabaka is not going to gain you admirers from the true YYH fans. He has his moments, often times being the one to defuse entirely too tense situations but in his own way he is an intelligent person. He is not a complete weakling either, that sword of his can and is put to good use on more than one occasion. Nor does he approach every single humanoid creature that might be mistaken for a female and beg her to be his girlfriend. He is extremely devoted to Yukina and I have a hard time believing he would forget her for a moment to ask another female out.
Hiei. Is not going to fall in love with any female be it Kagome or an OC within ten minutes of meeting her. He is also not going to proclaim his undying love and devotion from the mountain tops and present her with lavish gifts in full view of his team mates, their families, their extended families, and their third cousin's best friend's husband. He's much too private of an individual and has no use for turning all gushy because a girl looks at him with hearts in her eyes. He is on the other hand a very sarcastic, callous, blunt demon who has no hesitation on telling someone in the most cutting terms possible that they are being an idiot for whatever reason.
Yusuke Urameshi. Is NOT Inuyasha. Yes, there is some similarities but make no mistake they are two different characters and I don't just mean in the looks department. He also does not make a habit of standing Keiko up every other date, unlike what we tend to see in so many fanfictions out there. Also, the majority of the missions they are given are relayed through Botan instead of the team making a trip to the Spirit World.
Kurama. He is not exactly the sweet, niave person that seems to come through a lot of the time. He is very calm, reserved and precise about his actions but at the same time there is a definite hard side to him that is often completely overlooked. It's often struck me that he is made to be too perfect in a lot of instances. The other extreme I've noticed is authors making him too soft, crying at the drop of a hat. Unable to do anything if he doesn't have the support of his team mates. Always remember he is a very powerful demon who has survived centuries without relying on others. He's not going to completely break if he is rejected or his lover leaves him, ect.
Another thing is the debate over the Youko aspect. Split souled, Dual personalities, ect. My personal opinion is that it's most likely dual personalities though there is one instance where they do speak to each other even if it is brief. Not enough to make a true basis on for me but there it is. I usually portray them as split souled, just to make things more interesting but please for the love of all that is holy. If you are going to make Youko an active personality in a story he is not a brainless, hyperactive pervert. Youko, if it is possible is more of a cruel, cold hearted calculating bastard than even Hiei is. You won't see him bouncing up and down like a grown version of Shippo on a sugar rush and the idea of looking at Kagome or any one else once and saying 'mate her' to Kurama makes many of us out there groan and hit the back button.
If anyone wants to add to this feel free, I'm always interested in other peoples view points on the YYH guys in order to better my own work.
